The National Museum of Scotland offers something for everyone while a visit to the National Portrait Gallery will bring to life many of the historical figures you have read about.
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before this morning's guided walking tour which will be the perfect introduction to Scotland’s capital. You'll get a first look at the city and you'll learn about the fascinating history and culture of our beloved "Athens of the North" as you explore. The tour includes some stops away from the traditional routes without forgetting the corners that you can not miss during your visit to Edinburgh. Your guide will take you through the Old Town and its intricate alleyways to see some of its most emblematic buildings and characters, then continue to the New Town, picturesque Victoria Street, Grassmarket, and the chilling cemetery of Greyfriars, before touring the most representative buildings of the University of Edinburgh, one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world. With a 3-hour duration, this will be a fun and entertaining visit in which you'll also get a whole series of tips both to enjoy the city and to organize your plans for the following days. The remainder of today is free to continue strolling the city's ancient streets, enjoy some shopping in the many stores along Princes Street or perhaps visit the spectacular Edinburgh Castle. (B)
Today put on your comfy shoes! Our "Scotland in a Day" tour covers the majestic beauty of Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, the Great Glen & mystic Loch Ness & more, all in the comfort of a 16-seater Mercedes mini-coach. Leaving the cobbled streets of Edinburgh, we'll travel past Linlithgow Palace and Stirling Castle. This region is soaked in history, so sit back and relax as your driver-guide entertains you with the tales of Mary Queen of Scots, William Wallace, and Scottish folklore. If you keep a look out, you can catch a glimpse of the Kelpies. These 30-metre tall horse head sculptures need to be seen to be believed. The tour continues through Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park before continuing north into the Highlands. Here the landscapes suddenly become more provocative - shimmering lochs, rugged mountains, forest-filled glens: it’s all so beautiful that it’s easy to forget these were once battlegrounds for fiercely territorial Highland clans. We will stop in Glencoe, one of the most famous natural landmarks in all of Scotland boasting steep slopes & photogenic peaks. Your driver-guide may reveal to you the tragic tale that’s haunted this valley for over 300 years. You'll then enter the glacial valley known as the Great Glen and pass under the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain. After this visual feast of mighty inclines, you arrive at Fort Augustus on the banks of Loch Ness where you'll have around one hour and a half of free time. Here you can search for the infamous monster during a relaxing boat cruise (50 minutes, from April to October), wander around the shores of the loch at your own pace, and grab a bite to eat. The journey south is packed full of classic Highland scenery as we travel through the curvy Cairngorms National Park, along Loch Laggan, and past Blair Castle back to Edinburgh with expected arrival around 8:00 pm.
