Seriously damaged by the earthquake in 62 AD, Herculaneum was later destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Fossilized in time by the volcanic rock that tragically buried the city, the town has come down to us “frozen” by the eruption which allowed the conservation of wooden structures and small objects, and wandering around the archaeological site of Herculaneum is just like stepping through an open-air history book. Today's tour will take you to and from the site in just one morning, with enough time to explore the historical relics on a guided walk. You'll see pieces of furniture, preserved upper wooden floors of houses, floor mosaics, and sculptures as you walk around the houses and streets. All this has made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and provides you with unrivaled insight into the life of the ancient Romans. After the tour, you will return to Sorrento. The entrance fee to the archaeological site is not included and is paid locally. The approximate duration of your tour will be 5 hours.
