Discover the “City of the Three Cultures”! Located 70 km away from Madrid is Toledo, a beautiful city-museum declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is one of the oldest towns in Europe and has great artistic beauty and buildings from almost all periods in history (Arabian, Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance, and Baroque styles). Toledo is called the “City of the Three Cultures” since Christians, Muslims and Jews lived together. In the XVI century, it was also the place of residence of the great painter El Greco. Departing Madrid onboard a comfortable air-conditioned bus, relax and enjoy the scenery on the way to Toledo. Then follow your local guide on a walking tour of this historic city. Once Spain’s capital, it is a perfect mix of Arab, Jewish and Christian cultures. Learn about Toledo's fantastic heritage and see how the coexistence of cultures through the centuries influenced its current architectural style. Stroll amid the courtyard cloisters and royal coats of arms at the San Juan de los Reyes Monastery and admire the building sponsored by Queen Elizabeth from Castilla to become a royal mausoleum, the most important construction built by the Catholic Monarchs. The walk continues toward the Synagogue of Sta. Maria la Blanca. Originally built as a synagogue, it was expropriated and became a Church only 211 years after it opened its doors. Today, it houses a fantastic museum of Mudejar (Arabic) style that you will visit. You'll also admire the world-famous painting by el Greco – The Burial of the Count of Orgaz – at the Church of St. Tomé and visit the ancient mosque “Cristo de la Luz”. At lunchtime, you will have the option to savour a wonderful tapas menu (*lunch option) or enjoy one hour & a half of free time for lunch on your own. Then, meet your guide again for a guided visit of the Cathedral of Toledo, considered one of the most important Gothic Cathedrals in Spain. Marvel at the stained glass windows decorating the naves, admire many paintings by el Greco and wander around the cathedral listening to your guide. At the end of this visit, enjoy a brief panoramic bus tour of Toledo, stopping at the "Mirador del Valle” viewpoint for the best panoramic view & photo opportunity of Toledo, before returning to Madrid. This bilingual tour (English & Spanish) has a duration of approximately 8 hours.
